Culls[edit | edit source]

At a certain point a cow will cease to earn its keep. Some reasons why a cow might be culled:

  • Fertility problems. A cow needs to have a calves at regular intervals to be profitable.
  • Poor production. If she isn't producing enough milk to cover costs, then unfortunately she can't stay.
  • Lameness. If a cow develops serious problems with her feet then it can become a welfare issue.
  • Chronic mastitis. While mastitis is common and treatable, some cows develop chronic cases and needs to be removed to stem the spread.
